Anant Pradhan & Larry McDonald Live @ Radegast Hall (Streaming on RFB2)

May 31 @ 9:00 pm 11:00 pm

Recalling the sounds of 1960’s and 70’s Jamaica, Saxophonist ANANT PRADHAN revives the traditions of its early innovators. With a deep reverence for musicians like Cedric Brooks, Count Ossie, and Roland Alphonso — Anant honors their legacy alongside one of Jamaica’s greatest percussionists, LARRY MCDONALD. These musical pioneers were renowned for their ability to infuse popular and traditional/roots music with their own unique flair, leaving an indelible mark on Jamaican music that continues to resonate today.

Mcdonald, a pioneer in his own right at eighty-seven, has over half a century of recording and performing experience, and has collaborated with artists including Carlos Malcolm, Gil Scott-Heron, Taj Mahal, and the late Lee “Scratch” Perry. Although often uncredited, Mcdonald was a legitimate influence in helping to bridge the Afro-Caribbean sound from calypso into ska and later reggae with his iconic style on congas and percussion.

A kindred spirit of McDonald, despite 50 years separating them, Anant Pradhan is a bonafide member of the next generation. As an official member of the current touring group of the legendary Skatalites, Pradhan has honed his musicianship under some of the greats of reggae music. Larry calls him “the steward of our music going forward.”

Together they breathe new life into the rich tapestry of Jamaican music. The band boasts a large sound, was awarded “Grooviest live show” by Brooklyn Magazine, and features some of New York’s finest reggae musicians — including members of the Frightnrs, the Far East, Akoya Afrobeat, Antibalas, Subatomic Sound System, and the Budos Band. Their combined expertise and passion create an electrifying ensemble that captivates audiences with every note.
